Shiatsu is a coming together of many ancient disciplines: Anma (massage) Do-in (exercise) breathing and meditation.
These practices, that had long been part of family and religious life in Japan, slowly became integrated into a more formalized healing art. In modern times Tokujoro Namikoshi sought to align Shiatsu techniques with Western medicine and since the 1950’s Shiatsu has been officially recognized by the Japanese government as a legitimate form of therapy.
